Conservation Technician
Closes: 12/19/2017 : The City of Aiken is accepting applications for a Conservation Technician. The Conservation Technician is an employee of the City of Aiken, but will work closely with the Aiken and Edgefield NRCS and Soil Water Conservation Districts. Major Duties: Recruit landowners to participate in the Grant; work with landowners to develop conservation plans, conduct site surveys and design BMPs (Best Management Practices). Manage financial contracts for these installations consistent with NRCS specifications and practices; ensure proper installation of agricultural BMPs; Prepare administrative reports in accordance with the requirements of the Grant and the District Commissioners and staff; Assist the Aiken and Edgefield Soil Water Conservation District’s Education Coordinator with Grant-related outreach efforts Qualifications: Have extensive experience in agricultural conservation, including developing conservation plans and implementing USDA-NRCS conservation programs (especially EQIP); ability to work with NRCS engineers to develop all engineering practices; experience using GIS mapping software, USDA toolkit, Pro Tracts software, handheld GPS; excellent record keeping skill; able to work with a variety of natural resources professionals, contractors, and private landowners This is a contract position subject to Grant funding. The position is part-time, hourly, estimated at an average of approximately 20 hours per week (will vary by the week), with no benefits. The position may require some evening and weekend work. The anticipated duration of the position is Fall 2017 through Fall 2020. Compensation Salary is negotiable, based upon qualifications and experience. Approved travel will be compensated at the standard federal government rate ($0.535/mile as of 10/6/2017). Major Duties: manages and implements urban forest management plan; manages tree inventory database, acts as curator for urban forest trails; coordinates landscaping maintenance of parkways and right-of-way; makes recommendations for annual budget; makes high levels presentations to the public and senior management on subjects of horticulture and arboriculture; designs, orders and implements of seasonal flower beds; hiring and disciplinary recommendations; supervises full time and up to 30 seasonal employees to ensure proper management of landscape; operational safety and training of all ground equipment, pesticides and fertilizers Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in ornamental horticulture; [preferred] or Bachelor’s degree in Forestry; ISA-Arborist certification with tree risk qualifications; valid driver’s license required; obtain category 4 chemical license within 6 months of employment Starting salary is dependent upon qualifications.
