Closes: 9/20/2019 : The City of Aiken Department of Public Safety is accepting applications for a full-time Environmental Control Officer to join our team. Major Duties Include: Captures, transports, and impounds stray, injured, and diseased animals; removes dead animals. Uses animal traps or tranquilizing gun to capture or sedate animals. Investigates complaints of animal cruelty, nuisance animals, and vicious animals; investigates animal bites to humans and ensures animal is quarantined. Investigates complaints of litter, unlawful dumping, and other forms of litter. Takes telephone calls and meets with the public to respond to questions and resolve problems concerning the animal and litter control laws. Charges and prosecutes individuals with violations of animal and litter control laws; testifies in court as needed. Maintains equipment and tools; cleans and repairs cables of restraint poles; repairs wire on traps; repairs holes in net; sanitizes animal traps and vehicle; cleans tranquilizer gun; wears safety gear when appropriate; notifies supervisor of equipment problems. Performs duties in a safe manner; maintains awareness of others in work area. Installs computer chips in animals for easier identification purposes. Produces incident reports on all animal calls. Drives and operates pump truck. Prepares reports, papers, and other documents; maintains and updates records and files. Works fire calls as needed. Performs other related duties as required. Minimum Qualifications: Must have a high school diploma or equivalent. One to two years’ experience working with animals or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
